The concept for the 2 rooms are:

A room for Inspiration (outside/above ground)
Inspiration is defined as:
  • arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity
  • a product of your creative thinking and work; "he had little respect for the inspirations of other artists"; "after years of work his brainchild was a tangible reality"
  • a sudden intuition as part of solving a problem
  • divine guidance: (theology) a special influence of a divinity on the minds of human beings; "they believe that the books of Scripture were written under divine guidance"
  • arousing to a particular emotion or action (Wordnet.princeton)


A room for Reflection (Submerged into the landscape)
 Reflection is defined as:
  • contemplation: a calm, lengthy, intent consideration
  • the phenomenon of a propagating wave (light or sound) being thrown back from a surface
  • expression: expression without words; "tears are an expression of grief"; "the pulse is a reflection of the heart's condition"
  • mirror image: a likeness in which left and right are reversed
  • the image of something as reflected by a mirror (or other reflective material); "he studied his reflection in the mirror" (Dictionary.net)

Room for Inspiration: Is exposed to the elements with a large full-height thickened glass window on one end allowing large amounts of natural light to enter and illuminate the space. Also allowing the occupant to view out to nature and draw Inspiration from nature. There is also a door where the designer can wander through nature to get hands-on inspiration.


Room for Reflection: In this room the Designer will gather their thoughts and ponder the possibilities. The room is illuminated by 2 pieces of glass that petrude above the surface gathering natural light on their edges and diffusing it down onto the walls of the room. This therefore still keeps a link with nature as well as inadvertently creating another space above the room where the designer could go and experience the nature first hand. 
It also can be seen that inside the painting Vermeer has used fames around the cupboards and openings and this in turn can be seen as an extension framing through diffused light.

Assignment 2- Room and Narrative



Painting: "The Geographer" by Johannes Vermeer
There is one source of light in the painting coming from the only window. There appears to be a left to right flow in this painting accentuating the flow of light into the space/room. The light spills over into the large open area on the right of the room casting a series of powerful shadows.
 
The Character (the designer) has an active stance as if he is inspired or drawn to what is on the other side of the window. He is surrounded by many interesting geometries.

Narrative: A secluded mountain side retreat morfted into the landscape for a designer who is inspired by nature.

The Site: Is located nestled amongst a serene mountain range in the south of norway overlooking a semi frozen lake.
